We all want our lives to be better. If we can stay near where we live and have a decent job and life then we would stay around. However, over many decades Irish men and women have left the island to earn a living and then finding out that the streets of London are not paved with gold.
As Jimmy McCarthy writes in this fantastic song, made famous by Christy Moore,
‘…the proof’s around London in the nobody zone, where the summer is fine but the winter’s a fridge, wrapped up in cardboard under Charing Cross bridge…’
This song is set in 1986 which was two years before I moved from Dublin to London and resonates so well.
